Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations has proposed 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030, identified and validated by 190 countries.

Efacec integrates SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 11 and SDG 12 into its strategy by assessing the impact of its activities, setting ambitious goals and communicating results transparently.

SDG 7
Affordable and
clean energy

Icon of a white sun icon with a power button at its centre on a yellow backgrund.
Ensure reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Why we should act

  • A robust energy system underpins all sectors like medicine, education, infrastructure and many more. Businesses can accelerate this transition by investing in renewables, prioritising energy efficiency and adopting clean energy technologies and infrastructures. Investing in research and development further encourages innovation in the global energy system.

~30%

of electricity is powered by modern renewables, but challenges remain in heating and transport sectors.

What is being done

  • SCADA Platforms for Optimised Management of multi-park and multi-geography renewable assets considering environmental, technical, regulatory and other constraints (EDP Renováveis, REPSOL).
  • Development of SF6-free switchgear portfolio, reducing environmental impact and enhancing sustainability in electrical infrastructure.

What we set out to do

  • Promote access to renewable energies, particularly in developing countries.
  • Ensure that 100% of the electricity used comes from renewable sources by 2030.
  • Increase the energy efficiency of our operations.

SDG 9
Industry, innovation
and infrastructure

Build solid infrastructure and promote sustainable industrialisation

Why we should act

  • Critical infrastructure supporting technology, communication, transportation, and sanitation is lacking universally, hindering economic and societal progress. Increased R&D investment, particularly in developing nations, is imperative.

  • This presents an opportunity for businesses to contribute to inclusive infrastructure development by prioritising sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation.

Manufacturing targets by 2030

are challenging for least developed countries to achieve.

* All data was retrieved from United Nation’s Annual SDG Progress Report (2024), available here.

What is being done

  • Efacec has been actively involved in projects dedicated to developing technological innovations that contribute to the energy transition.
  • 4.8% of revenues invested in R&D.
  • Participate in co-funded R&D projects to support the energy transition, digitalisation and automation of processes, electrification of mobility and eco-design

What we set out to do

  • Contribute to the development of infrastructures for economic development and human well-being.
  • Promote research, innovation and technological investment aligned with and focused on sustainable principles and contributing to the objectives of the Global Agenda, maximising synergies with partners.
  • Implementing annual reductions in GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions that achieve a reduction of half by 2030 and net-zero by 2045

of the GDP of many regions is being spent on Research & Development

SDG 11
Sustainable cities
and communities

Icon featuring white buildings on an orange background.
Make cities inclusive, safe and sustainable

Why we should act

  • By 2050, 70% of the global population will live in cities, making urban areas crucial for a sustainable future.

  • Businesses can help make cities competitive, safe, resource-efficient, resilient, and inclusive by providing infrastructure, researching and developing new products and services that improve access to resilient housing, transport, green spaces and public services.

1 billion

people lack access to all-weather roads.

* All data was retrieved from United Nation’s Annual SDG Progress Report (2024), available here.

What is being done

  • Development and production of automation equipment and systems, contributing to the progress of smart cities.
  • Development of new electrified urban transport systems, road and rail, contributing to road safety and reducing environmental impact, while making communities more inclusive.

What we set out to do

  • Expand the supply of public transport solutions to ensure safe, accessible and sustainable access for all.
  • Annually develop innovative solutions for cities to increase their environmental and economic efficiency.

SDG 12
Responsible
consumption and
production

Icon featuring a white loop on a golden-brown background.
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Why we should act

  • Unsustainable consumption and production patterns are the direct cause of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

  • As those responsible for much of the world’s production, companies have a central role to play in advancing responsible production and consumption. They can manage the sustainability of their own operations, reshape their existing models and adopt circular and responsible business models.

What is being done

  • Enhancing internal policies to integrate circular economy principles.

What we set out to do

  • Ensure that the main raw materials contain the maximum amount of recycled content by 2030.
  • Extend Life Cycle Analysis and circularity studies to the entire portfolio.
  • Strive to source cardboard and pallets for transport packaging from recycled or certified materials.
  • Ensure a continuous reduction in the intensity of waste and hazardous waste used in operational processes through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
  • Favour purchases from suppliers with sustainable practices.
