Efacec has won Phase 2 of the R#SPACE project, under the strategic contract with Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), the operator of the electricity transmission network in France. This project follows the successful qualification of the Phase 1 of the R#SPACE project – ‘RTE Smart Protection Automation and Control Ecosystem’, whose first major milestone was the commissioning of the first smart digital substation in Ploeren, France.
The contract covers the supply, development and qualification of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), including Bay Control Units (BCUs) and Process Interface Units (PIUs), according to an IEC 61850 architecture and data model.
In this project, Efacec, in addition to being responsible for developing and delivering these IEDs, also provides software and technical support, thus contributing to the digital transformation and resilience of the RTE network through smart automation solutions that enable a more efficient, safer and environmentally friendly electrical system.
As part of the existing eight-year frame agreement, RTE has included an initial supply of 41 BCUs and 92 PIUs as a basis. It is estimated that, throughout the project’s duration, the maximum number of IEDs to be delivered could reach 2,418 BCUs and 5,390 PIUs.
For Efacec, the launch of Phase 2 of the R#SPACE project represents a strategic advance, opening doors to the supply of products for the automation of any substation of the French transmission system operator (TSO), within the new digital architecture. With a significantly broader scope than the initial phase, it reinforces Efacec’s position as a benchmark in automation and protection solutions for smart grids, consolidating its presence with RTE and its role in the digital transformation of European electrical infrastructures.
With over four decades of experience in designing advanced technology for the supervision, control and automation of energy systems, Efacec has established itself as a global benchmark in the digital transformation of electrical infrastructures. With over 1,000 integrated systems in operation in more than 50 markets, the company develops reliable solutions tailored to the requirements of various markets. The Renewable Energy Control Centre in Spain is one of the flagship projects where Efacec has demonstrated its ability to lead the energy transition, promoting efficiency, safety and sustainability through intelligent automation.
